GLOSSARY

Emergency Stop

An emergency stop is the red, latching control on a yellow background that when pressed, overrides everything else and brings a machine to a safe stop in an emergency.

Design rules come from EN ISO 13850 and EN 60204-1: it must latch when struck, need a deliberate manual reset, and resetting must never restart the machine on its own. Under PUWER Regulation 16 e-stops are provided where appropriate, as the backup for the moment other safeguards have failed.
