GLOSSARY

Machinery Safety

Machinery safety is the discipline of keeping people from being hurt by the machines they operate and maintain, through design, guarding and safe use.

UK law approaches it from two directions: supply legislation such as the Supply of Machinery (Safety) Regulations 2008 covers how machinery is designed and built, while PUWER covers how it is used for the rest of its working life. A CE mark on its own is no guarantee a machine is safe in service, which is why in-use risk assessments and audits matter.

Other Terms

Controlled Stop

A controlled stop, or Stop Category 1, keeps power on to decelerate a machine before removing it, avoiding the hazards a straight removal of power can introduce.
