GLOSSARY

Required Performance Level (PLr)

Required Performance Level is the reliability target a safety function must achieve, set during risk assessment from severity, frequency and avoidability.

The risk graph in EN ISO 13849-1 walks through those three factors to land on PLr, and the designed system’s achieved PL has to match or exceed it. Serious injury, frequent exposure and little chance of avoidance all push the target up.
