GLOSSARY

Risk Assessment

A risk assessment identifies the hazards around a machine or task, scores likelihood and severity, then sets out controls to bring the risk down.

A common method scores severity and likelihood from 1 to 5, multiplies the two, then re-scores once controls are in place. Do the assessment on the shop floor; what actually happens there is often very different from the paperwork. Knox Thomas carries out machinery risk assessments for both manufacturers and end users.
