GLOSSARY

Safety Integrity Level (SIL)

Safety Integrity Level is the scale EN IEC 62061 uses to grade how reliable a safety function must be, from SIL 1 to SIL 3 on machinery.

Each level caps the probability of dangerous failure, and the levels map roughly onto Performance Levels, with SIL 2 broadly comparable to PL d. Which scale you use usually follows which standard your control system was designed to.
