A safety-related control system comprises of a chain of components, sensor to logic to actuator, that carries out a machine’s safety functions.

It is designed and validated to EN ISO 13849-1 or EN IEC 62061, using architecture categories, mean time to dangerous failure and diagnostic coverage. The design question is always how the system behaves when one part of the chain fails.
